Apple acquires Beddit to ramp up its sleep tracking tech
Apple wants to come into your bedroom to keep an eye on you while you sleep ... but not in a creepy way, of course.
The company just acquired sleep tracker Beddit, according to a CNBCreport. The news organization spotted a change on Beddit's online privacy portal, dated May 8, that alerted the company's customers of Apple's acquisition and that their personal data will now be gathered in accordance with the Apple Privacy Policy. Beddit also appears to have removed a page about its Apple Watch app from its site.

But it's not hard to guess why a sleep tracking company would be an appealing addition to Apple's offerings — the acquisition adds new branch of functionality to the increasingly health-focused Apple Watch.
Sleep tracking is one of the final frontiers in the health space left for Apple as the Watch shifts its focus to becoming a fitness and health powerhouse.
There are multiple third-party apps that harness the Apple Watch's sensors to log rest, but there's no built-in feature in Apple's own HealthKit — an addition the company has reportedly been mulling since last year, according to Bloomberg.
Other wearable makers have embraced sleep tracking as an integral feature in their devices, most notably Fitbit with its Sleep Stages and Sleep Insights features that rolled out alongside the new Fitbit Alta HR. As Apple positions itself as the top wearable maker in the market, sleep tracking is a must to put it head and shoulders above its competition.
