From universities and religious orders to sporting events and social clubs, women have often been excluded from spaces of power and influence. But that exclusion hasn’t stopped women from finding and building their own community spaces all over the world.

These are just a few of the many places built by and for women. Some are new, established in recent years to support the fight for gender equality. Others are old, aimed at preserving or reclaiming traditions that predate modern society by hundreds or thousands of years. They vary widely in focus, touching everything from fashion to food to fighting.
